37th Atalanta’s Victory Run

            The 37th Annual Atalanta’s Run went off without a hitch! You never know what life holds for you around the next corner, but you take the corner and roll with it. That’s how it was for this year’s event, everyone just rolled with it – including the Humboldt Roller Derby gals, who were awesome volunteers - even without their skates! The Co-op, along with the Breast and GYN Health Project, made sure we all had fun, refreshments, and flowers. James, Yoshi, Dane, and the Arcata High Track & Field team kept the traffic under control, the aid stations stocked, and the course marked and monitored. Jack, Tom, and Buzz staged our entire finish area. Amanda, Caroline, Candee, Gayle, Gwen, Jessie, and Rachel managed registration, while Eileen and Karen took on T-shirts and announcing. Of course, Yoon with the steady camera eye! Amazing job and kudos to all of you, our volunteers are worth their weight in golden apples!

            Even though I directed this event years ago (1999-2005), and I usually tried to volunteer with course marking, staging area, and even registration in the last few years with Sherry Myers – it was still a bit overwhelming to take it on again! Kudos to our former race director, Sherry Myers, for all her work with Atalanta’s from 2013-2017. So many of the small details this year were made easy for me because of Sherry’s attention to detail over the last 5 years. Many participants asked if Sherry would be back in the future ….. you never know what life holds for you around the next corner ….. perhaps Sherry, or perhaps someone new? It is a big commitment. But it’s also fun, rewarding, a huge help to our club, and is a great way to meet fellow club members, community members, and other runners!

            Atalanta’s Victory Run needs a new race director for 2019!

            Foggy Bottom Milk Run will need a new race director for 2020!

 

            The time is now to start planning for a successful transition of race directors for these events! If you are interested, or just want to throw a friend under the bus, call or email Gary Timek, or any of our board members, or come to a board meeting (next meeting is August 1st) or email Marlene at <allens@humboldt1.com>.
