Race Report - Dow’s Prairie 6.1 Mile and 2 Mile Races - June 18, 2016

Last Saturday morning 55 competitors ran up a mountain to Dow’s prairie, after starting near the ocean white with foam. They tore past Cypress Grove and Singing Tree through Gorilla Gulch. They sped down Grange Road to the T-intersection at Central Avenue. At the T the course was not well marked! Some ran further than others. But all made it to the finish.

Jasper Severn was the first to complete the traditional 6.1 mile (9,817 meter) course, followed closely by Solomon Reinman. Tami Beall was the first female finisher and her time was the second-fastest ever in her division. Other runners earning a spot on the all-time top 5 division list were Imogene Carson, Nina Carson, Kim Coelho, Mary Wells, Chris Hamer, Yoshi Uemura, and John Norberg. With his race Saturday John established himself as the first and only male in the 90-99 age division to complete the race.

The 2-mile race attracted 15 runners. The overall winner was 10-year-old Damian Dinan. Second place and first overall female runner, just over a minute behind, was Damian’s mother, Jen Foesig. The 2-mile course was changed this year for safety reasons. The change allowed competitors from both races to run together most of the first mile.

First time Race Director Jeff Haag is grateful for the guidance and support from everyone, especially Paul, Carla, Gary, Yoon, Tanya, Mj, Sherry, Marlene, Myrna, Barry, Sophia, and Tammy. When marking the course next year Jeff will be sure to include prominent mile markers, kilometer markers, and turn arrows in bleached (not whole wheat) flour.
