32nd Annual Dow’s Prairie Run
10:00 am, Sat., June 19, 2021
Directed by “Jeff Haag” <jh1@humboldt.edu>
At 10:00 am on a cool gray morning, starting on
the Clam Beach frontage road in McKinleyville, fifty-one fleet-footed runners
headed north. Those running the 2-mile course stayed at sea level. The 6-milers
ran mountains and prairies before finishing alongside the ocean (white with
foam). By then the sun was shining. It was a great day for the race.
The 2-milers were led by 13-year-old Rowan Magnuson,
who finished in 14:05. Rowan was followed by 70-something Cyril Carl and first-place female runner Melanie Wehan. Rowan’s dad was
somewhere back there too. The field was full of families, with multiple Magnusons,
Wehans, Hartlings, and Turners.
After a fast first mile together, the 6-milers
split from the 2-milers and headed up the “mountains” on Dow’s Prairie Road.
The hills did not slow the lead pack of four runners, who all ran faster than
35:00. Nicholas
Brichta of Arcata won the race in 32:54, a new course record. Lanore
Bergenske was the first female finisher in the 6.1-mile event. We
should say the ageless Lanore
Bergenske.
The race was efficiently run due to generous
assistance from volunteers Tammy and
Sophia Haag, (registration), Jack West, Bob Peck, Don Brubaker, Catrina
and Brent Howatt, (finish line), and
Yoshi Uemura and Mary Wells, (course monitors). Special
thanks to Six Rivers Running Club board members Gary Timek and Mark Ellis,
and to Yoon Kim (photographs,
results, and additional supervision).
Runners and volunteers all made the day memorable
and fun. I look forward to next year’s Dow’s Prairie Run. -- Jeff Haag, Dows Prairie Run Race
Director.
