33rd Annual Dow’s Prairie Run

10:00 am, Sat., June 18, 2022

Directed by “Jeff Haag” <jh1@humboldt.edu>

After placing sufficient safety signs and painting insufficient course markings, race director Jeff Haag and SRRC club president Gary Timek got to the staging at 8:45 am. A runner was already there! Grinning and shivering, 22-yr-old Henry Hashem-Lamb had arrived early to warm up and make sure he knew the course. “Right on Grange, right on Central” Henry repeated to himself as he warmed up. Over the next 77 minutes other runners, (53 total, see the results), and volunteers, (see below), trickle in. Henry was in a zone. “Right on Grange, right on Central”.

The race began at 10 am, with 14 entrants in the 2-mile race, and 39 in the 6.1-mile event. Melanie and Chris Wehan, with baby Wehan aboard the stroller, finished first in the 2-mile. They were followed closely by 8-yr-old Maxim Dennis. The strong field of 2-milers also included Maxim’s brother Nikolai, the Hartling sisters Emily and Sage, and 96-yr-old legend John Norberg.

The 6.1-mile course is not flat. At mile 1, runners begin a climb of 150 feet in less than half a mile. The course then rolls, twists, and turns along Dows Prairie road, through pastures and woods, past the Cypress Grove goat dairy and the Singing Tree nursery. The lead runners, Henry, Joseph Reider, and Thomas Nolan, got in their zones. Leaving the Dows Prairie area to start descending back to the beach, Henry dug a bit too deep. He successfully turned “Right on Grange”, but then went “left on Central”! Course monitor Holly Sage noticed, as did Joseph and Thomas. After running south on Central for ¼ mile, Henry’s error was corrected. In the spirit of fair competition, Joseph and Thomas did not take advantage of Henry’s mistake. Henry went on to win, in 40:30. Joseph was second, Thomas third. Iona Mahony-Moyer was the next finisher, for first place in the women’s division. Perhaps of note: Henry, Joseph, and Iona are all 22 years old. We can thank Thomas for representing us older folk. He’s 28.

All the results can be seen on the club’s web page, www.6rrc.com.

We are all fortunate to have tremendous volunteers. But let’s all acknowledge our tireless Club President Gary Timek and the invaluable contributions from our club’s photographer, newsletter publisher, and web page weaver, Yoon Kim. They work hard.

Registrars, who also participated in the run, were Jim Childs and Clayton Webber. Working the finish line non-stop for hours were Harry Kavich, Jack West, Bob Peck, and Don Brubaker. Course monitors were Tammy Haag and Holly Sage. Board member and utility volunteer Mark Ellis kept everything running smooth. Thank you all.
