Hammond Trail 2M & Half-Marathon
Race Results – 9AM Saturday, August 15, 2009
Submitted by Yoon G Kim <ygk1@humboldt.edu>
This is the second time we have switched the course
from “Hammond Bridge” of the past to the 2-year old “Hammond Trail.” Miles and corners
are (hopefully) accurately marked with “cones” thanks to Karen Kelley-Day and friends.
You can try out this beautiful course during your training.
Big “Thank You’s” to Ken Yanosko for registration and
recording, to Josh
Tyhurst for distributing water & cheer to thirsty runners, and
bringing back many cones, to Jim Griggs for going out to buy additional
case of water, to John Zinselmeier for the finish line cheer and
timing, to Gary
Timek for various support including lending me all the cones and other
stuff that I needed and even returning all of them after the race, to Sharon Powers for
various help + cheer, to Myrna Milender for preparing watermelon table,
to Barry
& John Milender to go out and check the race in progress, to Dale Bagley for
showing up early to help every year, to Brett Johnson for bringing some chips, and
most of all to all
the runners, family and friends who showed up and
cheered for the runners. Without your help and support, it wouldn’t have been
possible. Big thanks also goes to the first time runners. See you all again next
year – we’ll compare your time of this year with next year’s.
Mother nature blessed us in a typical Humboldt style
weather during August. There was very little wind and it may have been just a
bit warm during the race. Last year, we had 37 runners for both races together,
and we had twice as many and one more this year! I first worried about having
too much snacks based on last year’s number. As it turns out, Jim had to go out
to buy additional case of bottled water. Next year, I will prepare snacks and
drinks based on the average number of the last 3 years.
In the 2-mile race, Dillion Ayers was the easy
winner at a good time of 11:13. John Milender (at 12:47) ran well enough to
take the second place. Barry will have tough time to keep up with
John even after he recovers from injury. RJ Richard (at 13:09) also outran his mom.
Both of these two young runners turned in an outstanding time and look very
promising. Melanie
Richard was the first woman finisher at 13:16, and was a few steps
ahead of former Eureka High standout Nina Carson who ran 13:18 while visiting home
during summer. A total of twenty six runners covered a two mile course and were
properly rewarded with all the watermelon and cookies they could eat before the
half-marathoners returned.
In the half-marathon, there was a debate about if Matt Creason’s performance was due to summer training or a
statistical anomaly. He led the field with a personal best of 1:14:30 and
easily destroyed race director’s prediction. He came within 5 seconds of last
year’s best time set by Todd Braje of McKinleyville. Todd* came
back from World Cup 100K in Torhout, Belgium, on 6/19-20/09. He was 19th
overall, and 2nd among thirteen US runners sent by the USATF. Race director
thanks him for coming out and trying before full recovery. Todd writes about
his adventure in Belgium on his blog at http://toddbraje.blogspot.com/. It was
always great fun to watch these two outstanding runners, Matt and Todd, go head
to head. We hope to see a rematch again. Among the women runners, Chris Hamer
finished first at 1:42:08 and continued to show us how to defy gravity.
However, the biggest drop in time from last year was accomplished by Terri
Vroman-Little (with an improvement of 4 min’s 11 sec’s from 2008),
not by Chris (with an improvement of 3 min’s 32 sec’s from 2008). An
improvement of 3-4 minutes during one year is quite remarkable. Oh, among the
men, Pete
Ciarabellini showed almost a super human improvement with a
reduction of 24 min’s 27 sec’s during one year period. Hello, Pete, no
performance enhancing tricks, please J
But, nothing in sports seems impossible during this
month -- when Usain
Bolt runs 100 & 200 meters at a time (at 9.58 on 8/16/09, and at
19.19 on 8/20/09, Olympic Stadium in Berlin) that’s considered near human limit
until recently and Yong-Eun YANG beats Tiger Woods against all odds (at
Chaska, MN, The 91st PGA Championship with 280 strokes, Sunday 8/16/09). Did
you know the guy’s last name YANG in Korean means a “sheep”? Some Korean
newspapers had a headline “A sheep that overcame Tiger”.
Thanks to those who came out two years in a row. Here
is a summary for those runners:
