THE 2018 HOUR RUN ET AL

Who says the age of miracles is long gone? The 47’th running of the Hour Run and prelims proved otherwise. About half an hour before the start, the heavens opened, not your typical Humboldt soft rain, but a REAL rain. Luckily the few in attendance were able to keep semi dry, huddled under an overhang on the HSU track. When Seanna, a wonderful new volunteer, asked what she could do to help, I said she could make the rain stop. She promised to convene with nature, but indicated Mother Nature didn’t always listen to her. A bit later, Mike Wood brought a canopy that would keep volunteers dry. Wouldn’t you know it, the minute the canopy was put up, the rain stopped. Soon the sun came out and we had beautiful weather for the events. Whether it was Seanna or Mike who brought on the miracle, I give both credit.

Oh yes, there were some miraculous performances. The heroine of the day was Tami Beall. Her distance of 9 mi 900+ yds was the greatest distance covered by any woman in the 47 year history of the Hour Run; and SHE HAS JUST TURNED 50! The Wood family had a great day also. Father, Mike, won the mile run, and may have made the rain stop. And son, West, won the 400 meter and the hour run. John Zinselmeir now holds the all-time record in four age divisions in the hour run, and wife, Mary, cracked the top 5 in her 70’s division. Jurgen Giessel is now the record holder in the 80’s division, supplanting John Norberg. John has moved on and holds the record in the 90’s. There was another encouraging sign. Note that 5 of the 8 finishers in the Mile Run were 13 or under.

Thanks as always to Yoon for photography and results. He did the math to convert the distances for the hour run to miles and yards. The HSU track has been shortened to a 400 meter oval instead of 440 yards. Many thanks to Seanna who was super efficient in getting folks signed up and distances recorded, and who may have made the rain stop. She also did some lap counting. Thanks to Gary who helped time the shorter races and thanks to others who helped with lap counting. Finally, a big shout out goes to Sarah Ingram and Jamie Harris of HSU Track and X-Country who did the paper work enabling us to use the HSU track. They could use some financial support from SRRC members. (Hope I haven’t overlooked anybody.) See y’all next year when more miracles may take place. -- Bill Daniel <drd4462@att.net>
