Patrick’s Point Run 1/23/10
January 23, 2010

Saturday,
January 23, was one of the nicest days of the month. How could that be
explained? The explanation might be 102 runners with great attitudes smiling and
laughing (mostly before and after the races), bringing sunshine and a great
rainbow to Patrick’s Point State Park. Many times I congratulate runners who
win the race or run great times, but this time I want to congratulate everyone
for making the 39th annual race a great success. My wife, Jan, and I have been directing this run
for many years now, and this was the largest crowd we’ve seen. Although the 10K
was exactly the same size as last year (53 runners), the 5K expanded
substantially (49 runners).
Jason Lewis (16:21) and Laura McNulty (20:02) won their
divisions in the 5K and each have awards for the race awaiting them at the Jogg’N Shoppe. I’d also like to note the two McKinleyville high school runners, Tyler Coley (2nd in 17:05) and Tyler
Durbin (4th in 18:41) for outstanding performances. Possibly the most
outstanding race was run by 12-year-old John
Milender, who dropped 1 minute off of his best
time, running 19:02.
Cody Thompson sizzled over the 10K
course in 34:40, winning by over four minutes. Fifty-four-year-old Chris Hamer (45:32) held off 32-year-old Karen
Cole by eight seconds to win the women’s division. Karen and elder
statesman, Ron Ross, each have
awards at the Jogg’N Shoppe for winning their
divisions.
The
race seemed to be a terrific success and a lot of that was because of a few
people who put in extra time to help. Gary
Timek and James
Washington timed the races, with Karen
Brooks helping at the finish line. The race would not be the same without Barbara Edwards and my wife, Jan, who registered everyone and did
all the results. After the race, tired and concerned about finishing results in
time for the SRRC party, I raced off to pick up all the equipment from the
course. Just as I left the finish line, James
Washington drove up with all the equipment in the back of his truck. I just
can’t thank him enough for that extra help. As you made the turn to Patrick’s
Point Drive, you may have noticed a woman encouraging you on. That was Jonnie Miller, a good friend who
teaches with me, who volunteer each year at that same location. She tells me
she loves being there because everyone has a smile and is so nice to her.
Over
the years, the park rangers have spent very little time with this race on race
day, but this year they sent a ranger to help make sure things went smoothly.
When I expressed concern about the parking and number of people, the ranger
told me how happy he was to see the event a success. I want you all to know, in spite of the high
park entry price, the park rangers were there to make the event a success.
There
are awards to pick up at the Jogg’N Shoppe from the
race and the party. These people should be sure to see Mike Williams and pick their awards as soon as possible:

Finally, I will add a brief word
about the circuit. Every winner is in first place or tied for first place in
your division. You need five more races to complete the circuit, and you must
be a SRRC club member. Sequoia Park Run is Saturday, February 20. The two-mile
starts at 10:00AM and the five-mile begins immediately after.
