Thank
you to
everyone who came out to race today! We had 20 more people
than last year with a lot of new faces and two new memberships. Thankfully the
rain from the last few days cleared out and left us with an overcast, yet very
humid, morning to run.
Thank
you to all of my volunteers.
It is so great to have so many people who are always willing to help. Mj, Tara, and Tracy took care of registration, Tracy also worked with me at the
finish line making sure the “colors” were correctly awarded for the challenge
criteria, Rich Baker helped with set
up and collected tags, Gary Timek did our timing, Alma Zechman was at the turn around with
water and encouragement, Sherry Myers
made sure I had enough bib numbers, Kaia
Morris came early to help set up, and Connor
Trump put out the mile markers and carried heavy stuff to the start.
If
you earned a “color award” and did not receive your pin, let me know. I will
have extra pins with me at the 4th of July run. Track me down! J Tanya

P. S. CLAM BEACH 5K CHALLENGE
Like
my old buddy Jack Nicholson in "The Shining," "I'm Ba-ack!" And meanwhile, it seems, the running life has
managed very well without me. On a perfect Clam Beach day, with a little
cloud-cover (though not enough to keep me from getting a bit of a sunburn), and
no wind to speak of, things went pretty much according to form. Cody
Thompson took the overall first, making it look easy with a 17:51. Did he
even notice the hill? I asked him if he was still the half-mile record holder
at Arcata High -- yes, it seems young Joe Lopez fell just a tick short
of Cody's record at this year's recently-completed state HS championships.
Cody, now 37, has held the record for some 20 years! Meanwhile, Morgin Coonfield,
another state meet star at the ripe old age of 16, dominated the women with a
sparkling 19:04. She never makes it look easy -- always seems to be working
very hard, but the results have justified her efforts. Her coach, Jason Lewis,
is only one of many to comment on her work ethic. Eating only a few seconds'
worth of her dust was our 67-year-old All-American, John Zinselmeir,
at 19:26 garnering a "blue" pin, the highest award given for RRCA
age-group performance at this meet. Also noteworthy was Karen Kidwell,
at 22:43 high among the women, and fresh from her triumphant shepherding of 102
debut runners at the Grasshopper Peak Redwoods Run. Meanwhile, as Tanya
Trump handed out the color-coded award pins, I made the mistake of sitting
down for a spell, out of the reach of Cody, who had promised to help me
back up. My efforts to pry my bones off the tarmac occasioned a snippet of
comment from the podium, but all was forgotten in the glow of my
"green" award--proof positive that, like our verdant Humboldt flora,
I'm still on the "right side of the dirt."
