Thank you to all who came out and ran on a wonderful,
but “hot” and “muggy” day. My BIG APOLOGY to
those who ran 3-miles today. I must have marked “turn around” too close to the
start L -- I have found it out belatedly that it was only
about 2.85 miles. I will make sure this won’t happen again. So
those who ran 3 miles today got “5% off”.
The ½ marathon course was right and had no problems.
Maybe due to the hot weather, the only runner that is placed on the all-time
top 5 list in each age group is Laura
McNulty – 5th in all-time record. Most runners’ time was a tad
slower than last year’s including Jason
Lewis’ time. Congratulations to Dana
Ariel Webb, who not only signed up first in the morning, but finished her
very first half marathon today.
BIG BIG “Thank
You” goes to Ken Yanosko, Paul & Carla Kraus, Bill Dniel for
registration, collecting tags, timing, recording and organizing neatly, to Jason Lewis
& Tanya Trump for providing McKinleyville HS runners to guard
the course with signs and to give water & cheer to thirsty runners on the
course, also to Morgin
Coonfield’s family (sister, mom + dad) for water & cheer at the
aid station, to Gary
Timek, Paul Kraus and Harry Kavich for so much help, including
bringing big and small clocks, tables, chairs, paper cups, traffic signs and
even retrieving all the signs afterward, and most of all to all the runners,
family
and friends
who showed up, ran, and cheered for the runners. Without your help and support,
it wouldn’t have been possible. Big thanks also goes to the first time
runners. See you all again next year.

been your time. It’s calculated by (5% off time)´(3¸2.85).

P.S. -- HAMMOND TRAIL 3-MILER
Finally, a sub-eight race, but alas (see
Yoon’s commentary) with an asterisk! I arrived at Hiller Park after a night of
fitful dreams, remembering the way this race has buffaloed me in the past: in
2010, I was an hour late, expecting a 10AM start, and when I was allowed to run
alone, I turned around about 50 yards early, at a painted “turnaround” sign,
but not, as it developed, the right one. In ’11, the race now a 3-miler, I went
out hard, hoping for redemption, and was completely unprepared for the steady
uphill eastbound on Murray, or for the steep uphill after the turnaround. Crash
and burn! In ’12 I finally got it mostly right, but one out of three isn’t much
of a record.
I was optimistic, however, about the
heat (we’ve had some heat records hereabouts lately) which turned out not to be
a factor in the shorter race, though I heard it factored more heavily in the
Half. The first mile was almost entirely in an arboreal shade, with a gentle,
cooling sea-breeze -- but I had no more than crested the rise on Murray when
the leaders came bursting back toward me! My own first mile was a 7:49, fast
for me -- it seemed impossible! “Z” was going so fast as he burst from the
trail back onto Murray that he was carried most of the way across the street
before he could get himself headed west ... were these guys running 4-minute
miles? But shortly after that I saw that the turn came way early -- and I would
not have to climb down and back out from the gorge! Maybe I could have gone out
even harder!
Once back into the shade, I was able to
press it to the finish, though it seemed a longer mile than on the way out. I
caught a 10-year-old at the park gate, but let him run on, not wanting to lose
my cookies in an all-out dive for Yoon’s tri-lingual start/finish line. It’s
called “catch & release.” Tristan
Cole took top honors, not far ahead of Megan
Rolland, 1st female and a sparking 2nd overall! Morgin was 2nd female, and Chloe Pigg, who seems to have grown
several inches, 3rd, as the youngsters gear up for Fall X-C.
Morgin’s coach, Jason Lewis, took the men’s Half in 1:19, Laura McNulty the women’s title. Chloe’s coach, James Washington,
though he did not run, fared less well than Jason, having his car stolen the
day before. Hope he got it back!
