HOUR RUN

“Sunny” Sunday April 6, 2014

The “hour run” is one of the most venerable of SRRC’s races. It is also unique. The purpose is to see how far you can go in an hour. On a track, this means you are never more than 220 yards from the leader. Also you get to quit when the leader does. There is considerable debate concerning the most psychologically difficult part of the race. For my part, I say it’s between 30 and 40 minutes.

The weather gods were kind to us this year, though it was a bit warmer than I had anticipated and prayed for. Luckily Yoon rushed to the store and got some water. Thank you, Yoon.

First, the preliminaries! Surprisingly, there were only 2 participants of the 400 Meter Dash. Thomas Nolan blazed to a 52:54 clocking; while 68 year old Rick Park proved he had something left in the tank, circumnavigating the track in 91:26. Andrew Jones led a field of 6 in the SRRC and Quite Possibly the World Championship Mile Run, clocking a fine 5:09. With only 6 participating in this event, but record numbers in the hour run, it appeared folks were saving up for the main event. This was NOT the case for Andrew, Karen Kidwell (6:49), Doreen Lewis (9:02), and Jessica Powers (9:51), who would participate in the hour run. There were no Iron Men/Women this year.

Two of the 54 runners starting the hour run covered more than 10 miles, Jason Lewis (10 + 387 yds) and Trevor Carlson (10 + 40 yds.) They won the 20’s and 30’s divisions respectively. Hall of Famer John Zinselmeir (8-900) was the 60’s champ, and ever the precise Jeff Haag (8-587) took the 50’s. Brett Johnson (7-1100) was the crème de la crème of the 40’s. Laura Chapman (7-1210) was the fartherist lady and the 50’s champ. She was followed by Karen Kidwell, whose 7-440 may have been a tad short for her long distance racing. Tracy Johnson covered 7 miles, taking the women’s 40’s division, making it a clean sweep for the Johnson family in that division. Eleven year old Jadon Bruckner (6-660) had a fine performance. Ken Young (6-545) bested Jurgen Giessel (5-500) to take the really old guys division. Portia Matheson (5-246) barely held off Donna Ayers (5-176) for the not so over the hill ladies. OOPS! Almost overlooked 30’s champ Amber Thompson, who covered 6-1540. There were other fine performances, but the star goes to 5 year old Lulu Van Valkenburgh who covered 880 yards in her debut performance. Three runners were listed as DNF, an impossibility if you take more than one step. We’ll try to correct this next year.

A big shout out goes to Yoon for the water, the tabulations and the photos. Thanks also to Gary, for the chronomix action, and to Mj who was there in reserve. And, of course, thanks to the participants. See ya next year.
