Master’s Race 10K

        Friday was a warm and pleasant day at Clam Beach. As I put the final touches on the clean-up of the east side of the master’s course, which I call the “outback,” I pictured Saturday as even nicer. I was wrong!!

        In typical Humboldt county fashion forty one master’s runners dealt with the windy semi-nasty conditions cheerfully.

        After a three year absence John Zinselmeir returned to win the race for the 18th time! Reed Richard ran a great race but couldn’t overcome John’s seven minute and ten second head start. Greg Goldsmith ran a strong race for the third spot on the Hobart Brown trophy.

        In the women’s race, just five days after completing the ill-fated Boston Marathon, Lanore Bergenske ran an amazing race to take home the trophy for the second year in a row! Once again Chris Hamer had to settle for second. Portia Matheson will make her seventh appearance on the trophy, this time in third.

        Thanks to Paul Kraus for dealing with county, putting up the signs and doing the race timing, and president Timek for bringing the tables. Thanks to the lovely Gayle Patrice for traffic control. Many thanks to Karen Kidwell for being this year’s food and drink hostess, and of course to Yoon for photos, results and an added bonus this year; immunity from North Korean missile attack by his crazy nephew Kim Jong Un!
