Master’s Race 10K

        Clam Beach was sunny and warm at 9:00AM Saturday when I arrived to mark the course for our annual over-forty master’s race. Forty five minutes later, the wind had kicked up a little and the sun was gone, but it was still pleasant. By 11:00AM, 44 runners ranging in age from forty one to eighty two had signed up and it was time for a group photo and the staggered start of the race.

        Our first runner, Lynn Lawrence, started in cloudy but calm conditions. By the time our second runner, Myrna Weburg, started 4 minutes later, it was drizzling. When Mike Minton started 25 minutes into the race, we had steady light rain that lasted right up until Bob Burger finished the race around 1:00PM, when it proceeded to clear-up and was nice for the rest of the day. Oh, Well!

        Even though it was wet, it was calm which made for excellent running conditions. Laura McNulty showed up hoping for a race with Lanore Bergenske. Lanore couldn’t make it to the race, but Laura ran a fantastic race to claim the title for a third time and ran the fastest time of the day overall!! Laura Chapman came in second to get her name on the trophy for the first time and former champ, Chris Hamer got third this year.

        In the men’s race, John Zinselmeir prevailed by a wide margin once again. John is virtually unbeatable in this race! Reed Richard tried so hard to catch John, he ended up blowing-up and throwing-up and didn’t cross the finish line. This moved Yoshi Uemura up to second place and allowed Dave Ryan to get third and a spot on the Hobart Brown trophy.

        One downside of the weather was it cut our after race tailgate party a little shorter than usual, but everyone seemed to have a good time in spite of being wet! wet! wet!

        Thanks to everyone who helped with the race! Charlie Lawrence went above and beyond the call of duty – manning the south end of the course to protect runners from crazy drivers and offer encouragement, getting soaking wet in the process. Cody Thompson and family helped with the aid station. Karen Kidwell did an excellent job as food and beverage hostess once again! Paul Kraus did timing, put up road signs and dealt with the county. President Gary Timek brought the tables and the tailgate.

        Thanks to Yoon, who has finally gotten used to the fact that he doesn’t get the results until Sunday afternoon, at which time he can rush to his office, post the results and finally relax and enjoy some of his “to go” food from the race!

        The Master’s Race is always two-weeks before the Avenue of the Giants Races. See you all again next year. – Bob T.
